Sharing Tebwewin

Sharing Tebwewin is a documentary about cultural competence, health care and First Nations people. Tebwewin means 'the truth' in the Anishinawbe language and it is one of the seven sacred Grandfather teachings passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years.

This film deals with the real issues in a frank manner. It features discussions with Dr. Cornelia "Nel" Wieman, the first Anishinawbe female psychiatrist in Canada, Consumer/Survivor Advocate Stella Montour and three experienced First Nations health care professionals. The ongoing effects of colonialism on the First Peoples of Turtle Island (North America) are discussed. There is an emphasis on the inter-generational trauma caused by over one hundred years of forced residential schooling. It also examines the '60's Scoop' of First Nations children into adopted homes and the collective impact these factors have played on identity, communication, and building trust. The film also includes candid advice for those in the field about how the health care system and it's workers need to adapt their care to acknowledge the historical and contemporary realities that make First Nations people unique.
